REQUIRED WORKDISK SPACE
- Each student should have your own workdisk space for storing computer project files.
Do not share your workdisk space or give any project files to any other student.
Do not copy any computer project files from anyone else.
- Write your own name and email address on the external label of your removable media.
"I lost my disk" is not a valid reason for late assignments.
Keep backup copies of your own important work files.
"I lost my file" is not a valid reason for late assignments.
- There are several alternatives for the workdisk space that you will need:
- If you are using your own computer at home, then your own harddisk drive can serve as your own workdisk.
You are not required to turn in a workdisk at the end of the course.
If you share your own computer with a room-mate, then be very careful to do the following:
- Create a separate harddisk directory for each student
such as C:\My Documents\JohnDoe and C:\My Documents\JaneDoe- Start each project application with a File... New... command, rather than just emptying someone else's old application file.
- These steps will avoid the appearance of cheating by copying someone else's file.
Be aware that when a new Windows application file is created it is stamped with file creation date/time info that you cannot change and that the instructor can compare to other student files to detect cheating.
- The most popular removable storage is a USB pen drive ("Flash Drive," "USB Drive," or by many other product names).
Any USB pen drive provides very ample storage space for this course. USB Pen drives can be hot-swapped in/out of a USB port if you remember to click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" task bar icon before removal. The computers in the UMD Library 118/115 full access labs all have USB ports.
- Earphones are needed if you wish to hear the audio portions of the Web materials.
COMPUTER AND INTERNET ACCESS ARE REQUIREDStudents are required to have access to the following computing resources:Note: The UMD Full Access Computer Lab Fee will not be assessed for students in this course.
- A live Internet connection (56K or better)
- Microsoft® Windows XP SP2 or Vista
- Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7
- Microsoft® Excel 2007
- Microsoft® Access 2007
- Microsoft® PowerPoint 2007
- The University of Minnesota has entered into a campus agreement with Microsoft® to provide enrolled students with a choice of one version of Microsoft® Windows (XP or Vista), and one version of the Microsoft® Office 2007 suite.
Go to http://msca.umn.edu and click on "Order Software" to log in with your UMD userid and UMD password, and order your CDs.
The download option is not recommended because of the very large files involved.
Our understanding is that your login is screened to make sure you are properly enrolled with no holds.
The student cost of the media is less than $10.
You can pick up your media at the UMD Bookstore Computer Corner soon after ordering.
More campus agreement software information is at: U of M Software Options for Students.
If you pay the Full Access Computer Lab Fee you can use the Full Access Computer Labs, such as Lib 118/115.
Students who pay the LSBE Technology Fee can use the LSBE Computer Lab in SBE 54.
Note: The LSBE Technology Fee cannot be refunded.
