The curriculum of the 2004-2005 Study in England Programme includes a variety of course options that will enable you to progress toward your degree. Courses have been planned to take advantage of our British setting. You are encouraged to take a variety of UMD and British taught courses for a minimum of 15 credits each term.

Fall Semester 2004 Class Options

FSt 1004 Art 1405 Fundamentals of Ceramics or
or FSt 2002 Art 1400 Ceramics I (for majors/minors only) (2 cr)
A broad overview of some significant periods and movements will be balanced by the study of seminal works, the aim of which is to equip students with the key concepts and language of artistic analysis. Seminars will be coordinated with study in art galleries and hands on experiences to assist students in their analysis and appreciation of art.

FSt 3016 History of British Politics - From the Revolution to Today (2 cr):
This course will examine the development of the British politics since 1789. Discussion will include the Age of Reform, Chartism, and the labor movement.

FSt 1336 Span 1101 Beginning Spanish I (4 cr)
A language course is a must for traveling in Europe and appreciating different cultures. This course will teach beginning Spanish grammar, reading and conversation. When you sign up for this course, you are committing yourself to continuing the study for both semesters.

FSt 1935 Th 1051 Introduction to Film Studies (2cr)
This course will introduce students to ways of reading moving images through analysis of technical (camera, sound, editing, special effects, mise-en-scene) and narrative (storytelling, symbolic) codes of film making. Students will examine ways in which the Hollywood studio system works, producing films designed to appeal to, and be understood by, large audiences in the U.S.A. and internationally.

Spring Semester 2005 Class Options

FSt 1905 ArtH 1303 Art and Museums (History of World Art I) (2 cr)
One of the highlights of the Study in England Programme participation is seeing the exciting, sights of Europe's art museums and galleries, many of which themselves are historic works of architecture. This course offers the opportunity to locate great art and art museums before venturing to the Continent. A broad overview of some significant periods and movements will be balanced by an in depth study of seminal works.

FSt 2117 British Archaeology (2cr)
An overview of the prehistory and early history of Great Britain. Different periods of invasion and occupation by differing cultural groups, and their impact on society will be discussed.

FSt 1305 Comm 1112 Public Speaking (3 cr)
Most of us will encounter at least one instance where we will be required to speak in front of others. In this course you will apply the foundations of rhetoric to the public speaking situation.

FSt 1914 Engl 1101 British Short Stories (Literature Appreciation) (2 cr)
This course will explore the short story using works of British writers as examples. Such topics as defining the short story, its plot and theme, the importance of language in it, and its beginning and end will be discussed. Works by such writers as Walter Scott, Katherine Mansfield, Rudyard Kipling, and Ted Hughes will be used.

FSt 3015 FA 3710 Shakespeare's Dramatic Art (2 cr)
Since England was the home of Shakespeare, this will be the perfect opportunity to study some of his plays. You will study representative examples of Shakespeare's three dramatic modes: history, comedy, and tragedy. You will also learn about the social, intellectual and dramatic context of his plays.

FSt 1337 Span 1102 Beginning Spanish II (4 cr)
Your language instruction continues. The work will become more advanced in grammar, reading, and conversation.

FSt 2199 Film Genres (Introduction to Film Studies II) (2cr)
Students will examine ways in which other national cinemas exist both alongside and in opposition to the dominant Hollywood model, asserting elements of their own cultures while often also displaying the influence of American cinema. Examination will be also be made of the development of art-film narrative.
