The Department of Mathematics and Statistics
University of Minnesota Duluth
ANNOUNCES
A SUMMER PROGRAM OF UNDERGRADUATE
RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS
FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
and
THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY

The objective of the program is to provide an opportunity for eight carefully selected undergraduate students to learn firsthand the nature of mathematical research. The participants will conduct independent investigations, under the guidance of experienced researchers, on problems in combinatorics, graph theory and number theory.

Duration: June 9 - August 14, 2008
Stipend: $3500 for the full 10 week period
Allowances: Travel up to $500; living expenses $1500; on-campus apartment housing
Location: University of Minnesota Duluth
Deadline for applications: February 14, 2008

The program is intended primarily for students whose participation would occur between their sophomore and junior years or junior and senior years. However, others will also be considered. Applicants will be selected on the basis of motivation, scholarly aptitude, and a projection of the likely benefits to the participant. To qualify for stipend support, an applicant must be U.S. citizen (or national) or have permanent resident status. The exact starting and ending dates as well as the length of stay are negotiable. Participants are expected to spend a minimum of 40 hours per week on their research. There will be organized social and recreational activities such as biking, rafting and hiking.

In addition to an application form, applicants should arrange to have complete transcripts of all college/university work (they need not be official) and two letters of recommendation sent to (via e-mail, U.S. mail, or fax):
