Government-Sponsored Databases

The following databases have been created by various units of the United States federal government and are available free of charge to all users.

American FactFinder - results from Census 2000, American Community Survey data, and the 1997 Economic Census

Cold Regions Bibliography - search over 200,000 items of materials related to cold regions' science and technology

Cool (College Opportunities Online) - search information on colleges, universities, trade and technical schools, and community colleges

DOE Information Bridge - searchable database of full-text energy research reports from 1996 to the present

Edgar Database - financial information on U.S. public companies who file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission

Envirofacts (EPA) - access point for several databases on the environment including Toxics Release inventory, Superfund (CERCLIS) and others

Environmental Health Information Service - access to databases and journals (Environmental Health Services)

Federal R&D Project Summaries - search research project summaries and grant awards funded by NIH, NSF, and DOE

Federal Reserve Economic Data - current, weekly, monthly U.S. and regional economic data.

FEDSTATS - statistics available from over 100 U.S. federal agencies

FRED, an Economic Time Series Database - downloadable data files on historical U.S. economic and financial data for seven states (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis)

Gateway to Educational Materials - database of curriculum resources for K-12

GPO Access - over 30 full-text databases made available by the Government Printing Office

GrayLit Network - searches technical reports and other literature published outside of normal publication distribution channels by a group of government agencies in science

HazDat Database - information on the release of hazardous substances, their health effects, community health concerns, superfund sites, and more.

Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications - bibliographic records of publications of the United States government since 1994

NLM Gateway - access to several databases in the medical field including MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, and others (National Library of Medicine)

National Climatic Data Center Online Document Library - data sets on climate

National Library of Medicine LOCATORplus - catalog of the books, journals, audiovisuals, and other medical research tools in the National Library of Medicine

National Technical Information Service (NTLS) - index to citations for NTIS publications by title or topic

Patents Database - searchable database of patents issued from 1976 to the present (images not yet available)

PubMed - indexes citations in medicine and related life science topics (NLM)

PubScience - index to article citations and abstracts in physical sciences and other energy-related disciplines

Thomas - access to full-text congressional publications including bills, laws, and committee reports

USGS Publications Index - a searchable database of references to the publications of the United States Geological Survey since its beginnings in 1895

WISQARS - interactive system capable of producing reports on injury and death rates from different causes and among different groups of people; sponsored by the Center for Disease Control
