Leadership Interview

The purpose of this assignment is to afford you an opportunity to investigate an educational leader you admire or who interests you. This leader must be a named leader in early childhood administration (i.e. a director, principal, manager, etc.). You will summarize the results of your interview within a webx discussion, so that others may benefit from what you learned. IMPORTANT: In order to respect the privacy of the person you interview, please do not share their identity within your webx discussion. You may refer to them, for example, as Mr. X and their institution School X (or something more creative!).

After the webx discussion (there will be a separate folder for this entitled "Leadership Interview") please send me a brief (1 page or less) summary of your interview. Most importantly, I'd like to know if you found any surprises, anything confuse or disappoint you, with regard to the interview?

Consider the following:

  1. The dimensions of leadership we are exploring (and that you already understand about the world).
  2. How the interviewee might view leadership and management as different concepts (or, perhaps not)
  3. The values they claim to (or try to) live by as they function in a leadership role.
  4. What kinds of formal or informal leadership (and/or management) training have they received?
  5. What experiences have they had as both a mentor and someone who has been mentored?
  6. What advise to they offer?
  7. How do THEY think they got where they are today?
  8. Does the interviewee exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding of behavior?
  9. Does it appear they adapt educational programming to the needs of diverse constituents?
  10. Anything else you'd like to know about them from a leadership perspective.

This assignment will be scored on the basis of your:

A. Ability to create a meaningful interview experience--think about interveiw questions that would be suitable (70%)

B. Adequate summation of your findings to peers in webx (10%)

C. Be actively engaged in your group's discussion re: interviews (both sharing and offering feedback to others) (10%)

D. Summary of interview submitted to instructor (10%)
