Databases for Children and Young Adults

The following databases are available to UMD students, faculty and staff as well as users in the University of Minnesota Duluth library.  Children and young adults can access some of these databases through the public library.

Authors

DISCovering Most-Studied Authors offers fast and easy access to biographical, bibliographical, and critical information on 1,260 of the most studied authors from ancient times to the present. For each author, there are two types of entries: Biography and Criticism

Use this comprehensive database to retrieve in-depth reference content for the core curriculum areas of Literature, History, Biographies, Science and Social Studies.

 

A general interest database to find articles from newspapers, reference books, and periodicals, many with full-text and images. Find the latest current events, popular culture, business and industry coverage, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more.

Grolier Online

Online encyclopedias for K-12 students. This resource includes the following references: Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, The New Book of Knowledge, Nueva enciclopedia Cumbre en linea, The New Book of Popular Science, Lands and People, and America The Beautiful.

 

InfoTrac Kids
Edition

Designed for K-6 aged students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc.

InfoTrac Junior
Edition

Designed for junior high and middle school students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc.

 

InfoTrac Student Edition

Designed for secondary school students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc.

World Book Online Reference Center

The World Book Online Reference Center provides searches to the World Book by title; subject; maps and atlas; tables; sounds; views; pictures; animations and videos; back in time articles; and special reports. Also available is an atlas; dictionary; and Explore Minnesota which provides links to resources in the World Book Online Reference Center and to assignment topics.
