Databases for Children and Young Adults


The following databases are available to UMD students, faculty and staff as well as users in the University of Minnesota Duluth library.  Children and young adults can access some of these databases through the public library.

DISCovering Most-Studied Authors offers fast and easy access to biographical, bibliographical, and critical information on 1,260 of the most studied authors from ancient times to the present. You can search by author; title; subjects/genres/characters; timeline events; and full text search.

Use this comprehensive database to retrieve in-depth reference content for the core curriculum areas of geography& cultures; history; literature; person; multimedia; and science and health.

 

General Reference Center Gold

A general interest database to find articles from newspapers, reference books, and periodicals, many with full-text and images. Find the latest current events, popular culture, business and industry coverage, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more.

Grolier Online

Online encyclopedias for K-12 students. This resource includes the following references: Encyclopedia Americana; Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia; The New Book of Knowledge; La Nueva enciclopedia Cumbre en linea; The New Book of Popular Science; Lands and People; and America The Beautiful.

 

InfoTrac Kids
Edition

Designed for K-6 aged students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on plants & animals; geography; people; current events; science & technology; environment; government & history; just for fun; health, arts & literature; and sports.

InfoTrac Junior
Edition

Designed for junior high and middle school students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc. Students can search encyclopedias; magazines; maps; newspapers; and reference or all sources.

 

InfoTrac Student
Edition

Designed for secondary school students to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc. Students can search encyclopedias; magazines; maps; newspapers; and reference or all sources.

Junior Reference Collection

 

Designed for students grades 6-8, this database has information from reference books about people, places, history, science and more. Includes photos and maps.

 

Kids InfoBits

Kids InfoBits designed for the research needs of students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. It features a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate, curriculum-related magazine, newspaper and reference content for information on current events, the arts, science, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

World Book Online Reference Center

 

The World Book Online Reference Center provides access to the online encyclopedia as well as an atlas, dictionary and "Explore Minnesota" section. Entries can include encyclopedia articles; maps; tables; sounds; pictures; back in time; and special reports.
