ABOUT ME
Well, I come from
Maharashtra in India, but have been brought up in Goa for the first 18 years of
my life. In fact, my family is still in Goa. I came to Pune to acquire my
Bachelor’s degree. But for all intents and purposes, Goa is home!
And so let me take this
opportunity to tell you a little about Goa. It is the smallest state in India
and has a population of less than 1,100,000 (1.1 million). Also, it holds the
honor of being the state with the highest per capita income in India. It was
also adjudged as the ‘Best State in India’ by a well-known national weekly,
called ‘India Today’
A tiny emerald land on the west coast of
India, it is situated between the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Legend
has it, that Goa was created by the arrow of Lord Parshuram. He shot the arrow
from atop the Sahyadris and such was its force that the sea moved behind,
forming the land of Goa.
Goa was
under the rule of the Portuguese for over 450 years. In fact, Goa was liberated
from the Portuguese rule only in the year 1961, while the rest of India became
free in 1947. This long occupation of Goa by the Portuguese accounts for the
unique blend of the East and the West, the traditional and the modern, the
industrious and the laid-back, that symbolizes Goa.
Goa attained statehood on 30th May 1987. Though a late
entrant to the planning process, Goa has emerged as one of the most developed
States in India. A very striking feature of Goa is the harmonious relationship
among various religious communities, who have lived together peacefully for
generations. You can find out more about Goa by clicking on the link placed
above. I would strongly recommend it. It is worth a look.
