COURSE DESCRIPTION: Chem 2541 is the first semester course of Organic Chemistry at the sophomore-junior level. This class serves as an introduction into the chemistry of carbon. It will cover the structure and bonding of carbon-containing compounds and their reaction mechanisms with a particular focus on hydrocarbons such as alkanes, alkenes and alkynes. Furthermore the concepts of stereochemistry, halogens as functional groups and structure determination in Organic Chemistry will be presented
