Liberal Education: Category V. Courses in this category are expected to focus on the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theory of natural phenomena. In this class we will address the identification of very common minerals that we use in the world today. We will learn how these minerals form, in partiuclar with relation to plate tetonics. You will research the literature and the web for mineral usage, synthesize these results and present them in class. You will be using your critical thinking and writing skills. You will create charts using excel that show historical usage of commodities and you will learn how to interpret these charts. This is not a traditional class in geology, however, you will be introduced to rocks and minerals, research in mineralogy, writing, and manipulating data.
