This course is designed for Teaching Earth Science Majors and for other interested people. You are expected to have taken a first year course in geology and 1 semester college chemistry. Basic mathematics (e.g. algebra) and high school physics are also assumed. All lab exams are open book; all lecture exams are closed book. You will be tested on mineral composition throughout the semester.

The first half of the course is centered around mineralogy and the second around petrology (the study of rocks). Sunday April 23 we will go on an all day field trip to look at the local rock formations. You are expected to take field trip notes which will be graded. In conjunction with this field trip, you will write a short paper describing the geology of the Duluth area. We will also take a field trip to an operating iron mine on the Mesabi Range on Tuesday April 18. You will be expected to keep notes on this trip as well.
