Day 1. Saturday September 22

Stop 1. Grandview Site. Base of the North Shore Volcanic Group.

Contact between the Nopeming Sandstone and pillowed flows of Ely's peak basalt.

Stop 2. Skyline Parkway Overlook

Layered gabbro of the Duluth Layered Series.

Bathroom Stop at Thomson Hill

Stop 3. 57th Avenue W. Quarry

Anorthositic Series Rocks of the Duluth Complex capped by troctolitic series

Stop 4. Lakewood Township

Contact between a rhyolite and pahoehoe flows of the North Shore Volcanic Group

Stop 5. Burlington Bay, Two Harbors

Rubbly top of an aa flow, quartz tholeiite. (And a lunch break.)

Stop 6. Split Rock State Park

Anorthosite, Diabase, and aa flow

Stop 7. Northshore Mining Railroad Cut at Beaver Bay

Columnar jointed basalt

Stop 8. North of Ilgen City

Overturned flows

Stop 9. Sugar Loaf Cove

Thin olivine tholeiites. Pipe vesicles, Sand Dike

Return to Finland and camp.

We will collect samples to be used in the petrology lab. We expect to be home around 3 p.m.
