About me:
I currently teach courses in the Sociology-Anthropology Department
at UMD. I came to this institution after receiving my Ph.D. in Sociology from
the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982. My areas of teaching expertise
include research methods and statistics, sociology of the family, social stratification,
and demography. I have also taught courses in introductory sociology, sociology
of sport, children and childhood, divorce, family violence, and introduction
to college learning. Most of my research has been focused on family and children's
issues. In the last three years, I have been studying business and economics in order
to better integrate my course content with the world of the workplace. Outside
of work, I enjoy running, cross country skiing, hiking, paddling a kayak, camping,
music, gardening, and spending time with my family. My husband and I have three children
in high school and college, and they are my greatest source of joy and inspiration.
