As a former electric utility operations executive, Tom Ferguson joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a visiting 3M McKnight Professor. Mr. Ferguson was heavily involved with others in the local engineering profession in the start-up of the Department in the mid-1980s. He has taught a variety of upper division courses throughout its twenty-year-plus existence, as well as chairing the Department’s Industrial Advisory Board until 2005.

Mr. Ferguson holds Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota, with concentrations in power systems and electromagnetics. He is also a graduate of the Carlson School of Management’s Minnesota Executive Program. His education at UMD and the U of M prepared him well for chairing several national and international power systems organizations, advising members of Congress on energy matters, and crafting policy on grid operations and expansion. His interests include all aspects of energy conversion and delivery, including planning, engineering, operations, policy and environmental issues. He remains a student of communications systems and antenna design.

Mr. Ferguson is a registered professional engineer, holds commercial and amateur radio licenses, and is the president of Ferguson Consulting, LLC.
