THE MYSTERIES : PROJECT SUMMARY
Julia Stein, an emerging feminist film director sets out to make her third film, with backing from some questionable sources. The project is one that has obsessed the filmmaker all her life: bringing to screen the Greek myth of Demeter, the Goddess of Fertility, and the abduction of her daughter Persephone by Hades, the God of the Underworld. Ms. Stein’s vision for the project is to weave the myth into an accurate recreation of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the nine day long religious festival celebrated for over two thousand years at the Temple to Demeter in Eleusis. Ms. Stein surrounds herself with experts to help her actualize this independent picture with historic authenticity. She also hires a young student intern to document the production process, for eventual use on the dvd release of THE MYSTERIES. A series of shrouded events leads to the eventual disbanding of the production crew and cast. All that remains of THE MYSTERIES, are these mini-documentaries created by Sophia Funk, the student intern.
THE MYSTERIES DVD BONUS FEATURES:
THE HISTORY OF THE MYSTERIES a mini-documentary including interviews with experts on the history of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the site at Eleusis and ancient Greek art + mythology. This stand-alone documentary portion of the dvd will contain honest interviews with respected scholars.
PRE-PRODUCTION mini-mock: (fictional mini-documentary) interviews with the director, producer + designers about the planning of the film: The Mysteries. Issues about script development, casting, scouting locations, storyboarding, animatics, 3-d modeling, scenic drawings, costume designs...
ON LOCATION mini-mock: On the set in Greece + Minnesota, mockumentary interviews with cast + crew about the making of the film: The Mysteries, mid-production... when things are going well...but signs of unraveling.
POST-PRODUCTION mini-mock: The aftermath, legal issues, attempts to restore damaged film, theories about what happened to the missing film... missing people + footage shot in Greece? Psychological breakdowns + conspiracy theories...
DIRECTOR’S JOURNAL: the unfinished diary + digital scrapbook of the director of The Mysteries.
DVD EASTER EGGS: hidden film clips, deleted scenes, cheeky animations, and bloopers that you can access via the dvd interface. The way to access to these bonus portions (Easter Eggs) will be leaked over the internet.
