“I want to thank you and the IEO for awarding me the UMD study abroad scholarship for my trip to China this past May term. The trip has forever changed my life and has served as one of the best experiences I have ever had. I learned so much about the Chinese culture, and met new friends from both China and UMD that I will never forget…I want to thank you for all the dedication and effort you put in to helping make these opportunities to study abroad happen.

"I am writing to express my gratitude for your recent scholarship contribution for my study abroad experience to Spain. …As a Spanish major, I view this trip as essential in my language development as it provides me with the chance to be completely immersed in the daily happenings of overseas life. I have also always loved traveling and encountering new people and cultures and am excited to experience this first hand by living with a native host family. I view your financial support as absolutely necessary for the opportunity and am incredibly thankful for the general support which further encourages me to continue my efforts in learning the Spanish language."

"As a working adult, the financial assistance made the difference between a dream to travel and expand on my cultural learning, as well as get in touch with my some of my own personal heritage, to move a dream to a reality. With the added responsibilities of a being a working adult, having the fiscal resources to pay for a regular semester tuition is hard enough, but to be able to take weeks off from work and to participate in the IEO and their supporters’ Study Abroad program would be downright impossible with the very generous assistance granted to me through a scholarship.
The scholarship for which I am deeply grateful for, will give me the chance to journey to Iceland and see the application of geothermal power, and give me more insight into the fields of geotechnical engineering, an experience that will teach me more through hands on understanding that I will also learn from traditional course work. The exposure to a foreign culture will also give me more to draw upon for my artistic endeavors, and give me a larger perspective with which to view the world…without the tremendous cooperation between the IEO and outside contributors, there would have been no possibility to add another semester…. without extending my time to graduation…."

"The [scholarship] will give me the ability to gain real world experience…and will help not only me but my family as well with the expense of the trip. It is important to me to be able to help out my parents with the financial aspects of my education, especially as I get older and realize how important and expensive a quality education can be."
