Fall Semester 2017

These Writers' Workshop Study Groups and Drop-in Sessions are designed for UMD students and scholars whose first language is not English. All workshops are free, and no registration is required. You are welcome to attend any or all sessions. We meet in KAML 213 on the second floor of the library behind the Writers’ Workshop.

Study Groups 

Topics addressed:


Speaking & Pronunciation: Linking, reductions, intonation, pronunciation exercises, conversation starters, discussions

Tuesdays (ongoing), 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.

Academic Writing: Formal academic verbs, mid-position adverbs, reporting verbs, verb tenses in literature reviews, hedging, establishing and occupying a research niche

Thursdays, October 19, November 2 & 9, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Writing with Sources: Finding sources, reading strategies, note-taking, summarizing, paraphrasing, quotations, and citations

Thursdays, November 16 & 30, December 7, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Drop-in Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 12:50 p.m. and repeated on Thursdays from 2:00 – 2:50 p.m. to accommodate different schedules.
