How do I... Register for Classes?
What to do if a class is closed?
At UMD, each department controls how to work with students once their classes are closed/full. Some use electronic waitlists, some have paper-based waitlists, and others advise students to show up to class on the first day.
If the class has an electronic waitlist, add yourself to the electronic waitlist
- The department will manage the waitlist as seats become available. This means that you may receive an email in the weeks prior to the start of the semester, advising you that you have an opportunity to accept an open seat. Be sure to follow the instructions! If enough people waitlist a course, the department may try to add another section if there is a faculty member to teach the course
- If you add yourself to a waitlist be sure that you have not enrolled yourself in a course that might have a time conflict with the waitlisted class
- If you have not heard if you are enrolled in the course by the first day, go to the class and ask the instructor if seats are available
If the course is closed and there is no waitlist available
- Contact the department through which the course is offered. Department contact information can be found online in the Department Directory
- The department staff can then inform you of the process for trying to enroll in that course, either by adding yourself to a paper waitlist with the department staff or by contacting the professor or instructor for options
If a course is closed and the waitlist is closed/full
- Contact the department through which the course is offered. Department contact information can be found online in the Department Directory
- The department can then inform you of your options regarding the course you are trying to waitlist
