DEAF
AND HARD OF HEARING PROGRAM
The Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students is provided by the
University of Minnesota to promote full accessibility to students and
to assist faculty and staff in meeting the needs of Deaf and Hard of
Hearing students. The goals of the program are as follows:
- To promote the educational development of students who are Deaf
or Hard of Hearing
- To coordinate direct services to students in order to ensure program
and curriculum access (i.e. interpreters, notetakers, adaptive testing,
faculty consultation, etc.)
- To improve the understanding and support of the campus environment,
and
- To promote the diversity and vitality of the UMD student body.
Students interested in utilizing services while attending UMD will have
an interview with the Program Coordinator to determine eligibility.
Upon completion of the initial interview, a decision will be reached
regarding appropriate services.
The services of the Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students include
the following, based on the individual needs of the student:
- Establishment of appropriate accommodations, such as interpreters
and/or notetakers, to ensure program access for academic and non-academic
activities, as requested.
- General academic advisement, counseling, and/or referral to alternative
departments within UMD or agencies in the community for more specific
needs.
- The arrangement for such course accommodations as may be deemed
necessary and reasonable.
- Assistance in arranging alternative testing and evaluation methods
- Priority registration for students who require the scheduling of
sign language interpreters or notetakers for their classes.
It is the responsibility of each student in the program to report regularly
to the coordinator so that any advocacy, accommodations, or other needs
can be anticipated and crises avoided. Students requiring interpreter
services must submit a copy of their course schedule at least one week
prior to the beginning of the new term. It is the student's responsibility
to inform instructors at the beginning of each semester of any accommodations
they may require.
