Alternative Format for Textbooks

Policies

Alternative formats are provided to students whose disability limitations interfere with independent reading. You should first check to see if the reading material is available from Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), from State Services for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, or one of the other publishing houses. For independent reading and recording, the Reading Edge and Kurweil 3000 are available in the library. They provide a fast and convenient way to read and/or record written material. Kurweil 3000 is also available in the DS&R testing area and can be reserved for use.Your Disability Services & Resources counselor has information on this equipment.

If the Reading Edge or Kurzweil 3000 do not meet your needs you can submit a request for alternative formats to DS&R. If your request for alternative formats is approved, you will be expected to observe the following:

    1. Obtaining electronic formats takes time. Requests for journal articles or class handouts will require up to two weeks since this work is done by students who have schedules of their own. Because of this time lag, you will need to plan ahead if you regularly need alternative formats. By using the Kurweil 3000 software you may be able to eliminate some of this lag time. The privilege of priority registration is granted to help your planning.

    2. Submit a request for books in alternative format with the following information: Title, author, edition, copyright date, ISBN, price of book and date you purchased the book. You should also let us know if you have check with the sources listed above. Submit a separate request for handouts along with the handout.

3.Books coming from RFB&D or the Communication Center are their property and will be checked out through the library when they arrive. You will receive an email indicating when they are available. Books from the publisher remain the property of DS&R. They must be returned at the end of the semester to ensure future service.

    4. You will be informed via email when handouts are ready. Unless other arrangements are made, you will pick them up in the DS&R general office area.

    5. Inform DS&R of any requested changes in quality or mode of delivery.

    6. Any changes in your college registration status for the class for which you are receiving alternative formats should be reported to DS&R as soon as you anticipate changes.
