UMD Scholarships for new first-year students

Outstanding achievements deserve recognition. The following scholarship programs honor entering first-year students for past accomplishments and recognize the gifts and potential they bring to the UMD community. We're committed to providing students with a quality education at an affordable price -- and we'd like to invest some of our resources in you.

Students must apply and be accepted for admission to UMD in order to be considered for scholarships.

Presidential Scholarship The University will consider Minnesota residents who rank in the top 5% of their senior class and demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities. $3,000 per yr/ 4yrs. Swenson Family Foundation Scholarship The University will consider students who are eligible for Minnesota resident tuition, plan to pursue a degree in chemistry or biochemistry and who demonstrate financial need, academic excellence, and aptitude. $10,600 per yr/4 yrs. Chancellor's Scholarship The University will consider students who demonstrate high academic ability and a record of leadership, and who intend to complete their degree at UMD. $2,000 per yr/ 4 yrs. UMD Scholarship Application; available from the UMD Office of Admissions. February 1
UMD Alumni Scholarship Awarded to non-resident students who have a parent or a grandparent who graduated from UMD. Recipients will pay current Minnesota resident tuition, renewable subject to good academic standing. Application for admission. Varies
President's Outstanding Minority & Morton S. Katz Scholarship To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must be a member of an underrepresented ethnic or racial minority* group who has demonstrated high academic potential based on high school rank, community activity and a letter of recommendation. $1,000 to $3,000 (considers financial need as demonstrated on FAFSA) per yr/4 yrs. Clayton, Jackson, McGhie African-American Scholarship The scholarship is awarded to an incoming African-American first-year student each year. Qualifications include excellent academic performance, community involvement and financial need. $300, renewable subject to good academic standing. Available from the African American Learning Resources Center, Kirby 270 Check with the African American Learning Resources Center.
Ethel Curry American Indian Scholarship The University will consider Minnesota residents who present written documentation of tribal enrollment and are one-fourth Indian blood quantum, and who demonstrate involvement in American Indian culture and community. Academic Scholarships Over 1,000 academic scholarships are awarded to entering first-year students. Selection is based on scholarship, high school rank, and ACT test scores. $500 - $1,000 for the first year only. Application for admission. Varies
Iron Range Scholarship The Univeristy will consider Minnesota residents ranking in the top 10% of their graduating class. $1,000/yr. for 2-4 years. Subject to good academic standing UMD Scholarship Application; available from the UMD Office of Admissions. February 1
Berlin Scholarship The University will consider students graduating from a northeastern Minnesota high school who demonstrate high academic ability and plan to major in English, communication, pre-journalism, marketing, business or a related field. $1,000 per yr/4yrs. Cocco Scholarship The University will consider students who demonstrate high academic ability. $1,000 per yr/4yrs. Subject to good academic standing. UMD Scholarship Application; available from the UMD Office of Admissions. February 1
Ianni Scholarship The University will consider students who demonstrate high academic ability and a record of leadership, and who intend to complete their degree at UMD. $1,000 per yr/4yrs. Passer Scholarship The University will consider students graduating from a Duluth or NE Minnesota high school who demonstrate high academic ability and financial need. Preference is given to students planning to pursue a degree in science. $1,000 per yr/4yrs. Subject to good academic standing. Wilmunen Scholarship The University will consider students graduating from a Duluth or northeastern Minnesota high school who demonstrate high academic ability and intend to complete their degree at UMD. $1,000 per yr/4yrs. National Merit Scholarship Students must list one of the University of Minnesota campuses as their first choice on the National Merit Scholarship application to be eligible. Students chosen as a National Merit Finalist will receive an award sponsored by UMD. $1,000 - $2,000 per yr/4 yrs. Contact your high school guidance counselor. Check with your guidance counselor.

 

3M Scholarship

 

The University will consider Minnesota residents intending to major in Math, Physical & Biological sciences, engineering, or business, based on merit. $3,000 /yr. up to four years. Marshall Center Awards for Excellence in Theatre or Dance The Department of Theatre awards two scholarships to outstanding incoming students with exceptional acting or technical talent in theatre. Students who plan to be enrolled full-time as theatre majors seeking the B.F.A. degree and who demonstrate high aca demic ability are invited to apply. The selection process includes an audition/presentation and an interview with a faculty member. $600 for the first year only. Music Scholarships Because of keen competition, music scholarships are generally available only to music majors. In cases of outstanding talent, others will be considered. Varies. Contact the Department of Music, 231 Humanities, UMD. Check with the Dept. of Music.
Air Force ROTC Scholarships Air Force ROTC on the UMD campus offers two, three, and four-year scholarships on a competitive basis. Amount based on the total cost of tuition and fees. Additional subsistence allowance of up to $1,000. Contact the Department of Aerospace Studies, ROTC Building, UMD. Check with the Dept. of Aerospace Studies.

You must complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for need-based forms of financial assistance.

For scholarship purposes, a student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good academic standing.
