New Students
Students are encouraged to submit their application by our priority deadline of February 1 for fall semester. Priority consideration for academic orientation and for on-campus housing is given to students who apply by February 1. However, applications for fall semester will be considered on a space-available basis through August 1. The New High School student deadline to apply for spring semester is November 15. International Students check here.
Please follow these procedures when applying:
- Complete an application form and submit it to UMD along with the $35 application fee. Please make checks payable to UMD
- Specify on the application the school or college to which you are applying. Students are admitted directly into schools and colleges at UMD according to their intended degree programs, pre-professional goals, or course interests. Specify the unit--Labovitz School of Business and Economics, College of Education and Human Service Professions, School of Fine Arts, College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Engineering--that offers your intended program. Students who are undecided about a major but are leaning toward a specific area (e.g., fine arts, business, sciences, teaching) should indicate this, and they will be assigned to the appropriate unit. Students who are undecided and are considering several areas of interest are admitted to the College of Liberal Arts.
- Request that appropriate official transcripts be sent to the Office of Admissions:
- New freshmen: high school transcript(s)
- If you participated in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program or College in the Schools while in high school, please request to have a transcript sent to UMD from the college(s) you attended
- Transfer students with fewer than 26 quarter credits attempted:
- high school transcript(s) and
- transcript(s) from previous college(s)
- Transfer students with 26 or more credits attempted:
- transcript from high school(s) and transcript(s) from previous college(s)
- Freshmen must submit when they apply. High school students are advised to take the ACT exam plus writing during their junior year
- An admission decision will not be made until the application is complete. Notification of the admission decision will be made approximately 3 - 4 weeks after the application is complete
High School Preparation Requirements
All students planning studies in baccalaureate programs at the University of Minnesota Duluth are expected to complete as a minimum the following courses either while in grades 9 - 12 or at an accredited postsecondary institution:
- FOUR (4) YEARS OF ENGLISH, with emphasis in writing, including instruction in speaking skills and in literary understanding and appreciation
- THREE (3) YEARS OF MATHEMATICS, including one year each of elementary algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra
- THREE (3) YEARS of SCIENCE, including one year each of biological and physical science
- TWO (2) YEARS OF SINGLE SECOND LANGUAGE
- THREE (3) YEARS OF SOCIAL STUDIES, including U.S. History
We strongly recommend that students also include visual and performing arts courses and computer skills courses in their college preparatory program.
UMD may admit students who have not met these requirements but whose academic records indicate potential success at the University. These students must make up the requirements before graduating from the University. How they meet these preparation requirements after admission will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Admissions; students may be required to take additional coursework to complete these requirements before graduating from the university.
The University of Minnesota Duluth views these requirements as MINIMUM PREPARATION for the baccalaureate programs. Individual colleges may also require additional preparation as appropriate.
Admission Requirements for High School Students:
- Students with no prior college work (PSEO students are included in this category) will be admitted if their high school rank is at or above the 65th percentile (top 35%) and if they have submitted results from the ACT Plus Writing examination
- Students with a high school rank below the 65th percentile (top 35%) or who have a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) may be admitted selectively based on ACT Plus Writing scores
- Students with a high school rank below the 65th percentile are required to participate in an academic assessment process as part of their first registration. This assessment will identify areas in which improvement may be needed to assure a successful college experience. Enrollment in Supportive Services Program skills courses, some of which are for non-degree credit, may be recommended or required
- Completion of all preparation requirements as listed above is REQUIRED of all applicants
