Medical School DuluthThe Medical School has as its primary mission the education of medical students to become family physicians or other primary care doctors to serve in rural Minnesota or American Indian communities. Thus, undergraduate students can complete their four-year undergraduate, pre-medical education program at UMD and can also complete their first two years of medical school here. After these first two years at the Medical School, students will automatically transfer to the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis where they will finish their final two clinical years of medical school and receive their MD degree. No other medical school in the country turns out a larger proportion of family practice doctors than UMD. The faculty at the school, while renowned for their teaching, is internationally recognized for their research expertise, securing more than $3.2 million in research and training grants each year. The Medical School Duluth has been successful in reaching its mission. Recently, the University of Minnesota Medical School was among the top ten medical schools honored by the American Academy of Family Physicians for graduating the greatest percentage of students who chose family medicine. Overall, 50% of the medical school's graduates have become family physicians, compared with 11% of physicians nationally, and 45% are practicing in communities of 25,000 or less, compared with 4% of physicians nationally.
