Music Department Category 10 Liberal Education Courses

The LEP ensembles are one credit and count towards completion of Category 10 – Literary and Artistic Expression: Performance. (Students need a minimum of 2 credits from a single course designator in order to satisfy LEP Cat. 10; thus, students should plan on completing two semesters of one or more music ensemble.)

The following music ensembles are open to students of all majors without audition or need for a permission number:

*Mu 1501 Concert Band (all instruments except strings & guitar) (1 cr)

*Mu 1510 Concert Chorale (vocals only) (1 cr)

String players should contact Rudy Perrault in the music department (rperraul@d.umn.edu)

Guitarists should contact Billy Barnard in the music department (bbarnard@d.umn.edu)

The following Liberal Education Program ensembles require an audition. Students should register for either Mu 1501 or Mu 1510 in order to begin the audition process. Changes in schedule will be made the first week of classes following audition.

Mu 1504 Chamber Orchestra

Mu 1512 Chamber Singers

Mu 1505 Jazz Ensemble I

Mu 1505 Jazz Ensemble II

Mu 1511 University Singers

Mu 1503 Symphony Orchestra**

Mu 1502 Symphonic Wind Ensemble**

Mu 1513 Vocal Jazz Ensemble

**Also counts for LEP international perspective

Applied lessons are also available for all students, simply by registering for instrumental or voice lessons. (Not for LEP credit.) No permission number is needed. Students will be charged a lesson fee in addition to the tuition cost per credit. Students who register for applied lessons should stop by the Music Department Office (231 Humanities) the first week of class to set up the lesson and time.
