What’s the difference between an exchange and a study abroad program?
An exchange program is a reciprocal agreement between two or more universities that allows students to pay regular tuition on the home campus, but study at a foreign university paying room and board there. A study abroad program can take a variety of forms (direct enrollment, stand-alone program, language school, service-learning, experiential, or study tour) with the program fees set by the sponsoring institution.
When can I go?
Most students study abroad their sophomore, junior, or senior years. Freshmen have limited options – mostly summer language programs.
What can I study?
Students can study everything from social sciences to the natural sciences, business to engineering, and liberal arts to performing arts.
For how long can I go?
Students generally choose to study abroad for a semester, academic year, summer, or a few programs run on the quarter systems. Still others run for only a few weeks during break periods.
How much does it cost?
The cost varies according to the program. UMD provides study abroad programs at low costs. General program costs (tuition, room, and board) can range from $3,000-$10,000 per term.
Can I use financial aid?
Students can generally use all the financial aid they are eligible for on the UMD campus. Tuition waivers cannot be applied to a study abroad program.
When should I start planning to study abroad?
It's never too early to start planning! A good time to start is your first year, even if you don’t plan on studying abroad until your junior year.
How do UMD students find out more about studying abroad?
Students interested in studying abroad access the resources of the International Education Office. The office is fully staffed and includes student peer advisors who have studied abroad. Website: www.d.umn.edu/ieo
