TRANSFER CREDIT INFORMATION

If the students has told us that he/she has previously completed college course work and has had an official transcript sent to UMD, then the advisement folder should contain a transfer credit evaluation and/or a U of MN transcript.

The student’s transfer credit evaluation (TCE) indicates how his/her courses have been accepted for transfer to UMD.

Transfer course work completed through another University of Minnesota campus is evaluated using an unofficial copy of the student’s U of MN transcript.

Courses transfer to UMD in three ways:

1 - As a direct equivalent to a UMD course:
Example: LK SUPR Comm 1110 = UMD Comm 1112

2 - As a departmental elective course:
Example: LK SUPR Geog 1202 = UMD Geog 1999
(UMD does not have an equivalent to LK SUPR Geog 1202; however, UMD’s Department of Geography agreed to give the student elective credit, which appears on the TCE with a course number of 1999)

3 - As a course that meets a liberal education category requirement.
Example: LK SUPR Math 1100 = UMD Math 0002A.
(0002 means that the course fulfills a category two liberal education requirement .)

The TCE may include courses that do not transfer to UMD. These courses are typically listed at the end of the TCE.

Disagreement with how a course has been evaluated

The student can petition to request that a course be reconsidered for transfer. To do so, the student should bring a copy of the course syllabus to the department he/she wishes to petition for credit. For instance, if the student wishes to have a sociology course reviewed, then he/she will need to meet with the department head for the UMD Department of Sociology. Again, the student will need to provide a copy of the course syllabus.

AA degree or MTC

UMD accepts both the Associate of Arts (AA) degree and the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MTC) as meeting UMD’s Liberal Education Program.

All courses will be evaluated on an individual basis and some courses within the AA or MTC may not transfer to UMD. However, even if some courses do not transfer, the AA or MTC still fulfills the Liberal Education Program requirement.

An AS or AAS degree does NOT meet UMD’s Liberal Education Program. All courses will be evaluated on an individual basis.
