What is an “Advisor”?

An advisor is a faculty or student affairs staff member with whom you meet and discuss your academic program and career/life goals.

Who is my Advisor?

Wondering who your advisor is? Here are a few ways to find out:

  • APAS Report: APAS stands for Academic Progress Auditing System. This report tells you how far you have progressed toward fulfilling your graduation requirements and what you have left to take. Your advisor is listed at the top of this report. Click here to go to the APAS report log in screen.

  • Enrollment Summary: On the UMD Student Self-Service website click on "View my Enrollment Summary" on the "Register for Classes" menu. Log in to view your advisor's name.

  • Portfolio: Log into ePortfolio and click on the Enter tab at the top of the left hand bar. Then click on Education to expand that information tree. Next click on “Academic Record” and then “Advisor”. If you want to know your advisor’s office number, phone and email, you can look them up using the UMD “People” search in the top right hand corner of this screen.

  • Call: Another option is to call the Advisement Coordination Center at one of the numbers below and our staff would be happy to assist you.

  • Email: Click on the “Ask an Advisor” link in the table on the left hand side of this page and send us a quick email. We will respond as quickly as possible.

  • Stop By: You are always welcome to stop by the Advisement Coordination Center, located in rooms 78-82 Solon Campus Center for a referral to your advisor or other services you may need.

Why should I meet with my advisor? Your Advisor can help you:

  • clarify your educational values and goals.
  • get accurate information on educational options, policies, and procedures.
  • guide you toward an academic program in which you can be successful;
  • acquaint you with the campus resources that can support your success.

When is a good time of the semester to make an appointment with my advisor?

You can make an appointment with your advisor whenever you need assistance and your advisor’s schedule allows a meeting. At the least, it is recommended that students make an appointment to meet with their academic advisor prior to registering for classes each semester. Some collegiate units require that students meet with their advisors before registration. Please refer to your UMD college’s Student Affairs website for more information about advising in each collegiate unit. Links to these sites are in the bar across the top of this page.

How do I change my advisor?You can change your advisor by contacting your Student Affairs Office and requesting an advisor change.
