UMD AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION ( to be completed by Nominator)

The American Indian/Alaskan Native Scholarship (AI/AN) annually honors and awards scholarships to four (4) undergraduate students in attendance at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), who exemplify excellence in academic and /or personal life. The work of the award recipient is characterized by exceptional personal commitment to the AI/AN communities.

Eligibility
Open to UMD undergraduate students who demonstrate significant contributions by direct involvement with the AI/AN communities. The following eligibility criteria will guide the selection process:

1. Be a Full-Time Undergraduate Student at UMD
2. Preference will be given to students with a 2.5 GPA or better
3. Submit a recent transcript
4. Demonstrate financial need (Current FAFSA must be on file)
5. Actively contributing to the AI/AN Community
6. Student must submit a 250-word essay describing their involvement with native communities
7. Must submit a letter from a community member clearly stating their volunteer activities
8. Transfer students are eligible to apply
PLUS FACTORS:
-Affiliated with a federally or state recognized Tribe
-United States or Canadian Military Veteran
-Gender equity will be a priority

Individual students may self-nominate themselves. Other students, faculty, instructors, university staff, and community members may make nominations as well. This nomination form and application is to be completed, typed and returned to:

The deadline for submitting nominations is August 1, of each year. To be considered for a scholarship you must apply annually.

Review Process

Student must submit an essay (250 words; typed size 12 font) describing in detail their involvement with American Indian or Alaskan Native communities i.e., participation, involvement in organizations serving those communities. The 'Scholarship Committee' will evaluate all nominations and applications. Award nominees may be asked to meet with the committee. The nominees will be notified no more than 30 days after the application deadline.
