(discussion with Dr. Vanio follows film)
This documentary film featuring Dr. Arne Vanio traces
the intimate journey of a middle-aged American Indian
male through the healthcare system as he gains a deeper
understanding of himself and the health risks he faces.
Dr. Vanio, who is an enrolled member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, is an alumnus of UMD and the Medical School, Duluth. He is a physician at the Min-No-Aya-Win Clinic on the Fond du Lac Reservation. Frustrated by middle-aged Native men not coming in for health screenings, he came to the realization that he also was avoiding the necessary screenings. This film gives special attention to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, suicide, and alcoholism
