Lt Col Michael
W. McGoffin is the Commander of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps
Detachment 420 and Professor of Aerospace Studies at the University of
Minnesota–Duluth, in Duluth, Minnesota.
He is responsible for recruiting, training, motivating, and educating
Air Force officer candidates.
Commissioned through the Reserve Officers Training Corps program at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, in December 1976, Lt Col McGoffin reported to the 44th Strategic Missile Wing, serving on missile combat crews and as an instructor. From 1982 to 1984, Lt Col McGoffin served as an initial qualification instructor for the Ground Launched Cruise Missile (GLCM) system. He was then assigned to the GLCM Program Management Office, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe (HQ USAFE), where he was responsible for the beddown of the 38th Tactical Missile Wing at Wueschheim AS, Germany. Lt Col McGoffin was transferred to the 303d Tactical Missile Wing at RAF Molesworth, England in 1987, as the Wing Executive Officer, then assumed command of the 303d Security Police Squadron in December 1987. In July 1988, he moved to RAF Chicksands, England to command the 7274th Security Police Squadron. Lt Col McGoffin reported to Fort Leavenworth Kansas in 1990 to attend the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. After graduation, he stayed at Fort Leavenworth to serve as Detachment Commander and Air Force Liaison to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, DoD’s only maximum-security prison. Following Fort Leavenworth, Lt Col McGoffin took command of the 319th Security Police Squadron, Grand Forks AFB, ND. In 1996, he moved to the U.S. Pacific Command, Camp Smith, HI, to serve as Chief, Antiterrorism Operations and Training Branch. In August 1999, he moved to Headquarters Security forces Center at Lackland AFB, TX as the Director of Air Force Corrections, where he was responsible for providing management, confinement and rehabilitation services for court-martialed Air Force members at DoD facilities world-wide, and assumed his current position in July 2002.
