What's Going On In Arnold Air Society?
By Daniel Toftness

As a new member of Arnold Air Society I am very excited to get started on the projects for this semester. Last semester as a candidate for the class I was able to get a pretty good feel for what AAS is all about. We were involved with things such as Bingo at the Senior Citizens Center, a Habitat for Humanity Project, a clothes drive, we put together the Homecoming Carnival over Homecoming weekend, and more. All of these events were very successful and we were happy to be able to make a difference. This semester we hope to make even better than the last one.  So far we have quite a few projects planned.  If all goes well, AAS will be involved in such things as, highway cleanup projects, Valentines for Kids, the second annual spaghetti dinner in April, soup kitchen, more Habitat for Humanity projects, a blood drive, Veterans Data Entry project, and work at the Richard A. Bong Heritage Center over the course of this upcoming semester.  We are also very excited about the National Conclave meeting coming up in April. We currently have airfare for two members to attend the conclave in Houston, Texas, and are working with the detachment at Michigan Tech to arrange for a C130 flight so that more members can attend.

This semester we have eleven members in AAS, which is the largest Detachment 420 seen in a while. This is largely due to the great leadership AAS has.  A special thanks goes to Captain Loughran, Cadet Patten and Cadet Dobbe for all their work.  The jobs held by our members are as follows:

Amanda Patten – Cadet Commander, Suzanne Dobbe – Deputy Commander, Ellen Czarneski – Director of Operations, Daniel Toftness – Public Affairs, Jessica Melchior – Historian, Jacob Fulgham – Financial Management, Peter Willis – Assistant Financial Management, Jonathan Stojan – Information Management, Timothy Zbaracki – Director of Support

Mandatory Fun
by Jason R. Miller

On Friday, 21 February, Det 420 held our Dining In.  The cadets get together about this time every year to have a formal dinner with a guest speaker and other activities. While attendance was mandatory for the cadets, the fun was outrageous!

We were lucky to again have Lt Gen Bruce Carlson as our guest speaker. General Carlson is a Det 420 graduate and is Commander, 8th Air Force, Barksdale, AFB, Louisiana. The three-star general often comes back to speak with and inspire students at his alma mater.

The dinner took place at the Air Force Reserve base at the Twin Cities international airport. This year was a little different:  we joined up with students from two other AFROTC detachments, Det 410 at St. Thomas University in St. Paul and Det 415 at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.

As the night pressed on and after experiencing the “grog bowl” ceremony, students tormented each other and det wars broke out. The students were encouraged by their own detachment to bring their ammunition. Anything from silly string to toilet paper right down to nerf toys were prime weapons of choice.  Once the wars ended, the winners went home spoiled and the losers of the war went home to plan for next year’s revenge. The cadets of the three detachments had plenty of fun and can’t wait for next year’s Dining In.
