Four Fulbright Scholars

UMD is very pleased to announce that four from UMD—two faculty and two students--have been named Fulbright Scholars for 2009 and 2010.

They are:

Alison Aune, associate professor of art education/museum education, Department of Art and Design, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to Sweden for Fall Semester 2009. She will be a lecturer and researcher in art education at the University of Vaxjo.

Alexis Pogorelskin, associate professor, Department of History, has been named a Fulbright Scholar. In conjunction with that award, she will serve as visiting professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow in Spring 2010, where she will teach a course on the "History of Hollywood" and conduct research on the opposition to Stalin in the 1920s.

Tom Beery, student, Department of Education, Teaching and Learning program, and instructor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar for 2009-2010. Tom’s proposed study will examine young people’s relation to nature, and analyze how environmental connectedness correlates to lifestyle measures and access to undeveloped urban green space. The study will be completed in Sweden in conjunction with the Swedish initiative, “Outdoor Recreation in Change.”

Sarah Willis, a December 2008 UMD graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany for 2009-2010. Sarah received her B.A. in German Studies and International Studies, with a minor in music. This semester she has been working in Berlin for a program called “Germany-meets-Turkey: A Forum for Young Leaders.”


Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State--designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills.
