UMD Alumni Association Scholarship Reaches Halfway Mark
|
The new UMD Alumni Association Scholarship is halfway to its initial goal of 10,000 dollars. It will be the first scholarship designed to exclusively benefit the children and grandchildren of UMD alumni and is part of the Reaching Higher Scholarship Initiative. The award will recognize student activities in leadership and community service.
The first scholarship will be presented in Spring 2007 to a UMD sophomore, junior, or senior. The application deadline is April 5, 2007. The initial award will be modest, but the amount will grow in time. When the scholarship fund reaches 10,000 dollars, the award will be matched by the UMD Reaching Higher Scholarship Initiative.
The Reaching Higher Scholarship Initiative is the largest and most important student-focused project in UMD history. It is designed specifically to remove financial barriers and provide scholarships and opportunities to those who could not have otherwise afforded college.
Scholarship recipients will become members of the UMD Alumni Association Board of Directors and will have networking opportunities with alumni, faculty and administration. They will be invited to chair committees and participate in alumni activities.
In November 2006, UMD alumnus Allen C. Willman, a retired teacher and administrator in area schools, approached the UMD Alumni Board of Directors with a proposal to create an alumni scholarship. The Board embraced his idea with enthusiasm. “This scholarship provides an opportunity to give back to our university,” said Mr. Willman. “All of us are in a better place because of UMD, and so we are very interested in helping students along their path.”
