Large Lakes Observatory Acquires High Tech X-Ray Core Scanner--One of Only Six in the World

The UMD Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) has recently acquired a new high-tech ITRAX x-ray fluorescence core scanner which will permit LLO researchers to study records of past changes in climate as preserved in the sediments of lakes. The instrument will be used to make rapid measurements of the chemical composition of the sediment cores of lakes enabling the scientists to discover how the earth's climate has altered in the past in response to changes such as solar activity, volcanic activity and atmospheric composition (green house gases)—thus providing great insight into our earth's past--and possible future.   Read More Here

Lawrence Knopp Named Associate Dean of Graduate School

Professor Lawrence M. Knopp, Jr. has been named Associate Dean of the University of Minnesota Graduate School for the Duluth campus, effective January 11, 2007. Dr. Knopp has been a professor in the UMD Department of Geography for over 17 years, and was selected as University of Minnesota McKnight Land-Grant Professor for 1992-94.   Read More Here

College of Science and Engineering Receives 3 Million Dollars From National Science Foundation--Project to Enhance Science and Mathematics Teaching in Schools

The College of Science and Engineering has received 3 million dollars in funding from the National Science Foundation for a five-year project to enhance science and mathematics teaching in schools. The program, titled “GK-12: Graduate Fellows in Science and Mathematics Education”,will place ten graduate students (called graduate fellows) into four Duluth area schools.   Read More Here

Labovitz School of Business and Economics Students Win International Business Strategy Competition

Three students from the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) have been named The Business Strategy Game 2006 Season II Best Strategy Invitational Grand Champions. The UMD team won over a field of 6,500 other teams from throughout the world (directed by over one thousand professors). UMD Adjunct Professor David F. Medical School-Duluth Dean Richard Ziegler Steps Down- Gary Davis Named Interim Dean

After serving ten years as head of the Medical School-Duluth, Dean Richard J. Ziegler has stepped down. Associate Professor Gary Davis, head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences, has accepted the position of interim senior associate dean effective January 1. UMD Alumni Association Scholarship Reaches Halfway Mark

The new UMD Alumni Association Scholarship is halfway to its initial goal of 10,000 dollars. It will be the first scholarship designed to exclusively benefit the children and grandchildren of UMD alumni and is part of the Reaching Higher Scholarship Initiative.
