Two Honorary Degrees to be Awarded at May 13 Baccalaureate Commencement

Baccalaureate Commencement Ceremony is set for Saturday, May 13 at 12 noon at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC). Over 1,000 graduates will march, along with over 100 UMD faculty members, making this one of UMD's largest commencement ceremonies ever. During the ceremony, two honorary degrees will be presented by UMD Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin and Dr. Anthony Baraga, chair, U of M Board of Regents. An honorary Doctor of Humane Letters will be awarded to world-famous nature photographer and filmmaker, Jim Brandenburg; and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for public service will be given to youth worker and education leader, and 1964 UMD graduate, Harry Oden. Graduate Commencement Ceremonies Set for May 11

Graduate student commencement ceremonies are set for Thursday, May 11 at 7 p.m. in the UMD Romano Gymnasium. Featured speaker will be Dennis Falk, Professor of Social Work, and Director of the UMD Center for Regional and Tribal Child Welfare Studies. Over 175 students will be awarded advanced degrees. Among them will be the first graduating class of the UMD Masters of Advocacy and Political Leadership (MAPL) program. Unique Masters Program to Graduate First Class

Among those receiving degrees at, May 11 graduate commencement ceremonies will be the first graduating class of the UMD Masters of Advocacy and Political Leadership (MAPL) Program. This first cohort class consists of 13 working adults from the Twin Cities, Duluth, and the Iron Range. Begun at UMD fall semester 2004, this unique program is one of a very few of its kind in the United States. There are no other programs of this type in Minnesota. The program is based on the cohort model in which a student group takes a core of MAPL courses moving together through the two-year program. The weekend program offers courses providing practical political advocacy experience and information through internships and teaching by knowledgeable faculty and guest speakers. Eight UMD Faculty Retire

UMD has announced the retirement of eight faculty members for the 2005-06 academic year. They are: James Belote, Assistant Professor of Sociology/Anthropology; Linda Belote, Professor of Sociology/Anthropology; James Fetzer, McKnight Professor of Philosophy; Craig Grau, Associate Professor of Political Science; Linda Holmstrand, Associate Professor of Biology; Andrew Klemer, Professor of Biology; Eugene Ley, Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; and David Mayo, Professor of Philosophy.
