UMD Launches First Doctoral Program

Beatrice Ojakangas and David Salmela Receive Honorary Degrees at May 12 Commencement

UMD Baccalaureate Commencement Ceremony was Saturday, May 12 at 12 noon at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC). One thousand graduates marched, along with over 100 faculty members, making this one of UMD's largest commencement ceremonies ever. During the ceremony, two honorary degrees were presented by Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin and Dr. Anthony Baraga, chair, University of Minnesota Board of Regents. An honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for cultural contributions was awarded to two prominent Duluthians who have achieved international recognition for their talents-cookbook author Beatrice Ojakangas and architect David Salmela.   Read More Here

Two UMD Scientists Discover Surprisingly Rapid Warming

Lake Superior is warming at a rate faster than the climate around it, according to a study conducted by two UMD scientists. "It is a remarkably rapid rate of change, and it is very surprising," said Jay Austin, assistant professor with the UMD Department of Physics and Large Lakes Observatory. Professor Austin co-authored the study with UMD geology professor and Large Lakes Observatory director Steve Colman. Their study has garnered national and international attention from the major TV and radio networks, as well as newspapers and prestigious scientific publications.   Read More Here

Political Analyst--Wy Spano Speaks at Graduate Commencement May 10

Advanced degrees were awarded to 147 students at graduation commencement ceremonies on Thursday, May 10 in the UMD Romano Gym. Among those receiving diplomas were new University of Minnesota Board of Regents student member, Maureen Cisneros. Ms. Cisneros is the first student from UMD to become a regent. Featured speaker for the event was Wyman (Wy) L. Spano, director of the UMD Master of Advocacy and Political Leadership (MAPL) program in the College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Bruce Gildseth Retires After 30 Years at UMD

Chancellor Martin has announced the appointment of Dr. Randy E. Hyman to the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Support and Student Life, effective July 1. Dr. Hyman will succeed Dr. Bruce Gildseth, who is retiring after 30 years of outstanding service as Vice Chancellor for Academic Support and Student Life at UMD. Immediately prior to coming to UMD, Dr. Hyman served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Director of the Graduate Program for Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.   Read More Here
