The Alworth Institute also co-sponsors the annual Baeumler-Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration. The commemoration is in memory of the late Professor Walter Baeumler of UMD's Department of Sociology-Anthropology and Mortrud Kaplan, a Duluth pharmacist.

The Baeumler-Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration is sponsored by the Baeumler-Kaplan Fund, the Twin Ports Jewish Federation, and several departments and organizations at UMD, including the College of Liberal Arts and the Alworth Institute for International Studies.
