Tom Millard is a ceramic sculptor from Birmingham, England, where he has taught with the UMD Study in England program since its inception 25 years ago. Grouped in series, with titles like Wave, Fossil, Standing Stones and Fissure, Millard's ceramic sculptures are inspired primarily by the ancient landscape on the edge of the Atlantic. Professor Millard studied at Redland College, Bristol and at the Birmingham College of Art, and holds Master of Philosophy degree, awarded for research into the relationship between image and language. For many years, he was senior lecturer in art and design at the University of Central England, and a lecturer in art history for the Open University.
In conjunction with UMD's College of Liberal Arts and its Study in England Program, the Tweed Museum of Art will host the exhibition Ancient Landscapes in Clay: Sculpture by Tom Millard Oct 18, 2005 - Jan 22, 2006. A ceramic workshop led by the artist is planned for October 20-23, 2005, in the Ceramics Studio of the UMD Department of Art and Design.
