Lesson # 1
Grade Level: 4-6
After a lengthy discussion about how society influences all of us the students are asked to list subject areas that affect the way we think (i.e. sports, politics, commercials, T.V., radio etc.). Using magazines the students are asked to create an individual collage about one of the influential subjects. The collage is to be created by using parts of magazine pictures and combining them to produce and imaginative version of the subject.
Social Study Objectives: To become aware of the many factors that influence our thinking. To select an area that seems to have the greatest affect on our thinking.
Art Objectives: To use selected images from a magazine to combine and create a totally new image. To recognize the forming of shapes. To become aware of the rich source of imaging material found in a magazine.
Needed Materials: Magazines, scissors, glue, paper.
