About the Header and Footer Includes

The header and footer includes allow you to make your site compliant with the Twin Cities University Relations Branding Policy with minimal effort. If the branding requirements change at a later date these include files will be updated to comply and all pages using them will instantly be in compliance.

This is the Header include. It has the University of Minnesota Duluth logo and wordmark and the toolbar links. The links for Search and People also activate and show the search boxes in the header. The header is set to be 100% of the width of the block it is in.

This is the footer include. It has the equal opportunity and copyright statements, the last modification date (both dates in the footer automatically change), and the links to other campuses with the University of Minnesota logo. Additional links for the privacy statement and DMCA are provided with other helpful links and UMD contact. You should also put a contact link for your area somewhere on your pages so users can easily figure out how to contact you directly. The footer is set to be 100% of the width of the block it is in.

Using the Header and Footer Includes

First you will need add the following two lines of code to the head, this is the section between the <head> and </head> tags, of your HTML.

<link href="/base/umd/head-foot.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="/base/umd/header.js"></script>

The next step is to replace the header of your web page (or template file) with the following virtual include directive:

<!--#include virtual="/base/umd/header.html" -->

and replace the footer of your web page (or template file) with the following virtual include directive:

<!--#include virtual="/base/umd/footer.html" -->

Note for PHP users

PHP pages need to use a slightly different bit of code to use the includes but the link and script lines are the same. Here is the code for PHP pages for the header:

<?php require_once('/web/base/umd/header.html'); ?>

and for the footer:

<?php require_once('/web/base/umd/footer.php'); ?>

Note: If you are previewing your web page, from your drive, in Dreamweaver or with a web browser you will not see the header and footer. This is because the virtual includes are not on your computer and will not be seen until the web page is on the server. If you want to verify everything works, you should upload a page that is not commonly used first. Once you have confirmed the header and footer do show up when on the server you can proceed to upload the remaining web pages.
