Extra Credit Opportunity

This exercise will be worth up to 5 additional points toward your final grade. It requires the following steps:

1. Keep track of your total intake of food and drink during a 24 hr. period sometime between Friday Oct. 7 and Sunday Oct. 10. This means you need to record the quantities of all food or drink items you consume during that period.

2. Determine how many calories were contained in your 24 hr. diet. You can calculate this by using the information at web sites such as this one.  If you eat or drink something not listed at that site, try the official USDA site.  Add up the calories contained in each item you consumed to compute your total caloric intake for the 24 hr. period.

3. Keep track of how you spend your time during your 24 hr. period, and then use the 'Activity Calculator' at this site at to determine how many calories you burned for each activity.  Summarize your activities as shown in the table below:

5. Compare your total caloric intake with your caloric expenditure.  Did you take in more calories than you used?  Was this a typical day for you?

 

6. This report must be submitted in Microsoft Word format.   It is due at 12 midnight on Monday, Oct.10  To submit your report go to WebVista ( https://www2.webvista.umn.edu ), click on "Calorie Intake and Expenditure Extra Credit", and upload your file as an attachment. Click on the "Add Attachment" button near the bottom of the page to browse for and submit your file. (Make sure your browser is set to allow pop-ups or this won't work).
