Carapace covers all or most of body, except for Anostraca

Abdomen – 6 pr appendages

5 pr pleopods

1 pr uropods Uropods + Telson (containing anus) make up “tail fan”

Basic Structure

Modifications for Special Functions: Sensory, Food Handling, Defense, Aerating gills,

Walking, Swimming, Carrying eggs, Sperm transfer

Serial Homology – repeated structures having the same origin and development

Example: crayfish appendages

Most Crustaceans have a nauplius larva.

Feeding Habits – suspension feeders, scavengers, predators, parasites

Crustacean Taxonomy: 3 Classes – Branchiopoda, Maxillopoda, Malacostraca

A. Class Branchiopoda - (“gill feet”). Water fleas, fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp.

Class Characteristics:

Numerous similar appendages considered “primitive”

Coxa (Basis/Protopod) forms a paddle

Multipurpose; unspecialized

1. Order Anostraca – Fairy Shrimp, Brine Shrimp

2. Order Notostraca - Tadpole Shrimp

3. Order Conchostracha - Clam Shrimp

4. Order Cladocera - Water Fleas
