Message from Chancellor Martin

March 11, 2010

To the campus community:

Following the Student Association sponsored forum on the no smoking policy during fall semester, I established a Smoking Policy Enforcement Task Force made up of students, faculty and staff. I have received and approved their recommendations and have placed responsibility for implementation with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Support and Student Life. A Smoke-free Campus Advisory Committee consisting of staff and students has been appointed to implement the recommendations and monitor progress.

Quoting from the task force report, "the best approach is a fresh and sustained effort to educate both the campus and the community of the smoke-free policy, with the intent of changing social norms." The committee will proceed to implement the task force recommendations beginning with a week of kickoff events following spring break. More information including a FAQ, and a schedule of events for kickoff week can be found at

UMD has been a leader among campus communities in providing a safe and healthy environment for students and staff. I am confident that the recommendations put forth by the task force will be instrumental in these efforts.
