Description: Identification, characteristics, and service needs of creative and intellectually gifted children; various programs to meet needs.


Course Welcome from Instructor:

Thank you for registering for Fall 2007, University of Minnesota Duluth course, Educ 5401, Section 200, 2 credits, CREATIVE AND THE INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED CHILDREN. This course is offered through Continuing Education (CE) as an Individualized Instruction Course (INI). This class consists of videotapes, selected readings, and papers. There are no class meetings or required meetings with the instructor, although you are invited to discuss your progress or problems with the instructor as needed.

VIDEO TAPES and SELECTED READINGS

The videotapes are available at the Main Circulation desk in the UMD Library (call 726-6120 for current hours). The selected readings are included in the course syllabus.

Students are expected to complete the class within 16 weeks. Students whose Individualized Instruction Course (INI) completion dates fall after the end of the academic semester will have a temporary grade of I (incomplete) posted by the instructor. At the end of the 16-week period, the I is changed to a grade when the instructor submits a change of grade form.

5401 Section 200, 3 credits

Course Requirements:

Participants will:

A.) View the 12 half-hour videotape series on gifted education to be checked out from the UMD Library Main Circulation desk. Write a 1-2 page response to each video addressing the following questions:

  1. What did you learn after viewing this video?
  2. How can you apply this new knowledge in your classroom / work / personal setting?
  3. What do you need to accomplish this action?
  4. What changes do you anticipate will take place from the application of new knowledge?

B.) Read a chapter in a book or a journal article on gifted and talented education. Use the questions above to write a 1-2 page paper based on your readings.

C.) Complete a final project selecting from the following choices:

  1. You have just been hired in a small rural school district as the gifted coordinator and they have not had a program. What steps would you take to initiate a program over the next 3 years?
  2. You are a classroom teacher and have been approached by a group of parents who feel their children are gifted. How would you deal with the situation to benefit students and satisfy parents?
  3. You are a member of gifted advisory committee and funding from the local level has been decreased. How would you steer the committee so that students who are gifted would continue to be challenged?

In the 5-8 page paper, please include the A.) The statement of the problem B.) Possible solutions C.) Best solution and rationale for choosing that solution. D.) Bibliography of a least 5 sources. One source must be an interview with a person in the field of gifted education. Another source must be a journal article less than 5 years old such as Gifted Child Quarterly, Roeper Review, Gifted Child Today or another source on gifted.
