Distance Education Courses

The term Distance Education is used to describe a number of different learning opportunities where the instructor and student do not meet face-to-face in a traditional classroom. UMD Continuing Education offers both academic credit and professional continuing studies (noncredit) options. We feel it’s important to have options because we all have different learning styles and life commitments.

As you explore this Distance Education page and links, please keep the following in mind:

• Academic Credit Courses refers to any course or program that involves UMD tuition and fees and can be applied toward degree and graduation requirements. Completed courses will also appear on an official UMD transcript. It is not a requirement, though, to be admitted or working toward a degree in order to take an academic credit course. Anyone can enroll in an academic credit course as long as they have met any listed prerequisites.
• Professional Continuing Studies Options include any learning opportunity that does not involve academic credit. Some of the the Professional Continuing Studies options fulfill certification and relicensure requirements, while others provide a certificate that can be used for career advancement and other career-enhancing goals.
