Where do I begin?

Academic Advising and Career Counseling

A professionally trained counselor is available to assist you with your academic and career planning and will support you in the following areas:

• learning about UMD and CE programs and services
• selecting classes
• getting registered
• guiding you through the self and career exploration process
• choosing your academic program
• deciding on your career direction

Confidential help is available to:

• Learn what steps you need to take to begin or return to college
• Find out more about your academic and career options
• Choose your major, minor, certificate program, or graduate program
• Choose classes to meet program requirements or to fulfill prerequisites for graduate school
• Select courses for personal or professional development
• Find out what additional steps you need to take before classes begin
• Get help with any problems you are encountering
• Take career inventories to begin the self and career exploration process
• Help you explore various career directions you may be considering
• Assist you with making career decisions and setting educational and career goals

Steps to take before beginning classes at UMD:

• Meet with the CE counselor for assistance with academic and career planning and to select classes
• Talk to any other staff or faculty as needed before registering for classes
• Register for classes with CE Registration
• Take a campus tour
• Buy your textbooks
• Get your U Card (UMD student I.D. card)
• Buy a parking permit if you plan to drive to campus
• Buy a recreational sports pass if you plan to use the recreational sports facilities
• Rent a locker if needed
