Continuing Education Certificate Programs
University of Minnesota Duluth Continuing Education (CE) certificate programs are developed in cooperation with a variety of colleges and departments at UMD.
Certificates can provide:
- A wide range of educational options for part-time and continuing students.
- A variety of options, including day, evening, online, and summer term courses.
- A stepping-stone toward a baccalaureate or graduate degree.
- Specialized training to supplement a baccalaureate degree.
- Valuable preparation and training for employment and promotion.
General Certificate Admission Requirements for all Continuing Education Certificates
- At least a 2.0 GPA on all undergraduate college coursework.
- At least a 2.7 GPA on all graduate college coursework.
- At least a 75% successful completion rate on all college coursework.
- Individual certificates have additional standards. View the additional requirements of individual certificates.
- You cannot be admitted to more than two certificate programs at one time.
- Each certificate application should include a check or money order (payable to UMD) to cover the non-refundable certificate application fee of $35.00.
Graduate and undergraduate credit:
- You cannot take both graduate and undergraduate courses during the same term.
- If you are admitted to a graduate certificate program, you must pay graduate tuition and take all of the coursework for graduate credit. The same rule applies to undergraduate certificates.
Transfer Credits:
- A minimum of 75% of the certificate coursework must be taken at UMD.

Academic Progress Requirements
- Good Standing for an undergraduate certificate requires a 2.0 GPA or above.
- Good Standing for a graduate/post baccalaureate certificate requires a 3.0 or above.
- If you fall below the required GPA, you will be asked to meet with an academic counselor to evaluate continued eligibility for the certificate.

- Request an official transcript be sent from each college you have attended to:

- You will receive a letter notifying you of your admission status after your completed application, your transcripts, and your application fee are received and processed.

- Print a copy of the Application Form.
- To request that we mail you an Application Form, contact Hilary Ramsey at hramsey@d.umn.edu.
Registering for Classes:
- You are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to a certificate program before registering for your first certificate course.
- Registration in courses required for a certificate does not guarantee admission to the certificate program.
- Current course schedule .
- If accepted to the certificate program, you will receive registration information along with your acceptance letter.

Certificate Completion Procedure:
After you have enrolled in the final course(s) of your certificate program:
- Print and complete the Certificate Completion Form and submit it to:

Duluth, MN 55812 - You will be notified by email of your “Pending” completion status.
- Once the final grades are posted, you will be notified by mail of your “Certificate Completion” status.
Certificate Honors:
- All certificates can be earned with honors.
- At least 75% of the certificate course work must be taken at UMD as A-F graded courses.
- 3.60 – 3.79 GPA on all certificate coursework - “Distinction”.
- 3.80 – 4.00 GPA on all certificate coursework - “High Distinction”.
Diploma Information:
- Diplomas are automatically mailed to the most current “Mailing Address” in the system if no “Diploma Address” is supplied. To insure that you receive your diploma, update your address information or contact Suzan Gonia sgonia1@d.umn.edu for assistance.
- When your certificate is awarded, it will be recorded on your UMD transcript.
- You will receive a University of Minnesota diploma documenting the award of your certificate within 6 -8 weeks.
