If you want to gain knowledge in a variety of liberal education areas, this certificate is designed for you. Course work is selected from the UMD Liberal Education Program, which is the overall framework around which all UMD baccalaureate degree programs are designed. With careful planning, the certificate may constitute the freshman year of a degree program in liberal arts or business fields.

Required Credits - 3

Category 1 - Composition -- Writ 1120 College Writing (3)

Distribution requirement - 21 credits minimum from 6 of the 9 remaining Liberal Education categories:

Category 2 math, logic, and critical thinking
Category 3 communication, computer science, and foreign languages
Category 4 physical and biological sciences with lab
Category 5 physical and biological sciences without lab
Category 6 social sciences
Category 7 historical and philosophical foundations
Category 8 contemporary social issues and analysis
Category 9 literary and artistic expression: analysis and criticism
Category 10 literary and artistic expression: performance

Electives - 6 credits minimum, to complete the 30 required credits:
liberal education courses from categories 2-10

To apply for admission to undergraduate certificate programs, you must be a high school graduate or have completed a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Admission to certificate programs is based on your previous college performance. Admission is generally approved if you have completed at least eight college-level semester credits with an overall GPA of 2.00. In addition, you must have satisfactorily completed at least two-thirds of all attempted credits. If you have completed more than 30 semester credits, only the most recent 30 credits are calculated.

It is recommended that you schedule a meeting with a CE counselor prior to registering for the first class of your certificate program.
