Leonore accepted the invitation (March 2012) from friends to visit them in Ouro Branco in the Brazilian State Minas Gerais, not knowing what to expect. She saw beautiful countryside, toured an iron mine, and gained new insights into the history of slavery and the reasons for Brazil’s diverse population. She would never have expected opulent Baroque churches in a vast fascinating landscape.

Title: West African Masks
Presenter: Sharon and Jack Kemp
Sharon is a retired anthropologist and Jack is a retired pastor and traveler.
Sharon and Jack will show pictures from Festima 2012, an international festival of West African masks and dances, which they attended in Dedougou, Burkino Faso, February 2012. They will also include some mask dances from a Dogon village in Mali, which they visited in March.
Lectures cover a myriad of topics, and are followed by a question and answer session.
They are held on selected Mondays at 11:30 a.m. In Kirby Plaza 311. They are free and open to the public.

Title: What Mining Sulfate Does to Our Watershed
Presenter: Len Anderson
Len has a MS in aquatic and terrestrial ecology and has taught for 40 years.
Len will discuss the present and proposed sulfate releases and what impact they will have on the Lake Superior watershed. He will also discuss the applicable law with regards to sulfate impact on wild rice and fish tissue mercury.

Title: Kurdistan, Iraq–A Country within a Country
Presenter: Marv Heikkinen
Marv is a retired Duluth Public Schools social studies teacher. He has taught several US study groups at UMD.
Kurdistan and the Kurds are the largest ethnic group without a state. 30 million Kurds live in the countries of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. We will zero in on the six million Kurds who live in Iraq and would like to be independent from Iraq. Learn about this democratic region in Iraq.

Leith is a sophomore at UMD. He is from Tunisia and has lived there most of his life. He has participated at the Arab Spring, which began in Tunisia in December 2012.
Leith will talk about Tunisian culture, what happened during the revolution, and what is still to come.
