The Mission of the Center for Environmental Education is to achieve excellence in environmental and outdoor education training, experience, and research for pre-service, in-service, and graduate level environmental education. This will be accomplished through collaboration between UMD departments, local, state, and federal agencies and organizations in order to advance the field of environmental education.

Objectives

Undergraduate Studies

The Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Recreation - Outdoor Education is awarded by the College of Education and Human Service Professions at the University of Minnesota Duluth. This program prepares students for professional careers in outdoor education allowing them to work in nonformal outdoor education settings such as nature centers; city, state, or national parks; college outdoor programs; or for commercial agencies.

Graduate studies

The Masters of Education in Environmental Education is also awarded by the College of Education and Human Service Professions at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Graduate opportunities will be coordinated through CEED to provide the academic background and experiences necessary to be effective environmental educators in non-formal and formal educational settings. As part of these efforts, CEED will conduct research to investigate effective teaching and learning in environmental education.

Regional and community resource center

CEED will serve as a regional and community resource in environmental education literature reviews, current research, curricula, and professional activities to promote effective application of environmental education.

Pre-service training

CEED will work with departments and programs in developing awareness, knowledge and skills of environmental education for undergraduate students who will be working in non-formal and formal educational settings.

In-service training

CEED will coordinate and offer workshops and courses to practicing educators in both non-formal and formal education settings which help to expand awareness, knowledge, and skills in environmental education.
